This is a photo of our Scotty the way it was when we bought it.
The camper was in good shape for its age, but there were a few things that needed to be touched up.
A bumper had been installed by one of the previous owners, and the original tail lights were not hooked up.
Seeing it from this angle, the camper looks extremely small! However, it's surprisingly spacious on the inside for such a tiny trailer!
The former owners used the canvas bunk for a child to sleep on, and also installed a small air conditioner in the front street-side window. I wasn't sure about the AC at first because I wanted to keep it as close to stock as I could, but after melting and suffering through a southern summer night - who cares if it's stock or not!?!?!?
A new refrigerator had also been installed and worked beautifully! The original light fixture was still in place above the sink/stove, but the wires had been cut and we were afraid to use the original aluminum wiring. I have since replaced it with a new florescent light and it works great.
The interior had been repainted and there were no signs of recent water damage or leaks.
After getting it home and examining it more closely, we found that there was some water damage to the wood on the bed due to the corners of the camper separating on the outside which allowed water to enter.
The wood on the bed was original, but it was old and had rotted over the years. It was bad enough that we decided to take it out and replace it all.
There was some storage under the back of the bed which also held the water tank, but I didn't feel that it would be enough space for our needs and would also be difficult to access.
The front benches were rotten and some pieces were missing. The table was in decent shape, but it was old and rickety.
We decided that the maroon carpet MUST GO! After ripping the carpet out, the original floors were actually in pretty good shape and didn't have any soft spots.... however the floor was full of staples that were used to install the carpeting so we put down new floors using 1/4" plywood.
We took the benches out and used the pieces as patterns to make new ones.
This is what's left of the Scotty logo on the front above the window. I am thinking about painting the camper in its original aqua-blue & white colors, and will replace the sticker afterwards.
The fiberglass stone guard covering the window was almost black with dirt, mold and mildew. After sanding and cleaning it, I painted it white.
After sanding the middle section of the stone guard, I discovered a faint outline of the Scotty "S". I would also like to have a sticker reproduced and replace it on the window, although I'm not sure what color the original was (black, red, etc????).
This is what it looked like after painting.
It cleaned up rather nice!
The tongue of the trailer had also seen better days.
After almost 35 years of being out in the weather, I figured it was time to give it some fresh paint.
I used a wire wheel on a drill and took all of the paint off - down to bare metal.
After priming with an anti-rust primer, I painted the tongue white also.
I thought it looked much better!
The stove and sink were in pretty bad shape. The plastic counter top was basically cracked in half, and the plumbing was in poor condition. The stove still worked but I didn't feel safe using it. It didn't bother me much to get rid of them both because I knew that we would be cooking outside most of the time anyway, and we could just carry a few gallons of fresh water in the truck.
My brother hooked up a 4-plug outlet that's connected to a 15-amp breaker box located under the seat. We can run the AC, refrigerator, and a small light. Anything else, and we have to unplug something!
We took the bed out and covered the floors with new plywood.
We then layed vinyl over the entire floor surface.
Next, we built the frames for the bench seats.
We used the old bench pieces as a template for the new seats, but modified them slightly to allow for more storage underneath.
A fresh coat of paint and they're as good as new!
We store all of our electrical extension cords in this bench along with the electrical breaker box.
We used the old table as a template when we cut out the new one. It's heavy, but makes one sturdy bed!
We took the old bed out and laid vinyl floor covering underneath. We left the middle divider just in case we ever wanted to go back to the gaucho-style bed.
We closed in the front half of the bed in order to make more room for storage that would be easier to access even if someone was lying on the bed.
The bed is hinged in the middle for easier access to the front and back halves of the storage space underneath.
We removed the sink, stove, and all plumbing and replaced it with a wooden counter top.
